Overview of APA – The Engineered Wood Association
Roy Frederick, Engineered Wood Specialist, APA – The Engineered Wood Association
Session Description: This course provides a comprehensive overview of APA – The Engineered Wood Association, its role in the wood products industry, and its contributions to ensuring quality, safety, and innovation in engineered wood materials. Additionally, we will explore how APA ensures performance, sustainability, and durability in residential and commercial construction.
Bio: Roy Frederick is an Engineered Wood Specialist for APA-the Engineered Wood Association. He is a resource for builders, engineers, architects, and code officials providing training on the use and installation of engineered wood products.
Roy is an experienced home builder having worked for over 25 years in all aspects of residential construction, estimating, and design, including code compliance, design changes, and plan performance. He has worked for Brighton Homes, Trendmaker Homes, and most recently David Weekley Homes throughout the major markets of South Central and Southeast Texas, as well as Denver, CO, Indianapolis, IN, Phoenix, AZ and Salt Lake City, UT. Roy is based in New Braunfels, Texas and is a graduate of Lamar University.
Steel Update: Joists and the SJI
Tim Holtermann, Executive Technical Director of Engineering, CSC - Canam Steel Corp.
Session Description: This session will be an update on the activities of the Steel Joist Institute, and the code development cycle. The focus will be on issues and concerns related to wood nailer steel joists, including bearing seat depths and deflection. There will be an interactive discussion about how the SJI might better serve this industry sector. The session will close with a brief steel market update.
Bio: Graduate of Purdue University with over 40 years of experience in the joist industry and over 35 years with CSC - Canam Steel Corp. Based in Washington Missouri, and a registered professional engineer. Former Chairman of the Steel Joist Institute Engineering Practice Committee, and currently completing a term as the Institute's President.
Steel Update and Forecast
Gustavo Morales, Regional Sales Manager, Canam Steel Corporation
Session Description: The session will be a briefing on steel market news and the current state of pricing with a brief forecast. Plus, the last slide is a discussion slide related to Environmental Product Declarations and our industry.
Bio: I have an undergraduate degree from NMSU in business and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. Collectively I have worked 20 years in the steel business including capital equipment sales the pre-engineered metal building industry and worked nearly 10 years for Reliance Steel and Aluminum. Currently I am the Regional Sales Manager for the West including Texas.
Five Years, Policy Shifts & a New Crew
John Mitchell, Principal, M & H Economic Consultants
Session Description: The presentation will focus on the current economic environment including prospects and risks and the likely path going forward. The intent will be to give a set of things to watch in this election season with all the rhetoric being tossed about as well as longer term issues. Oregon' performance and prospects will also be covered.
Bio: John Mitchell received his B.A. degree from Williams College and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Oregon. He is a fellow of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oregon and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was a professor of economics at Boise State University for 13 years, before joining U.S. Bancorp . He was Chief Economist of U.S. Bancorp until July of 1998 and served as Economist Western Region for US Bank until 2007, He wrote US Bank’s economic publications and was a columnist for Oregon Business Magazine. He was Business Analyst for KPTV on Portland. He served as Sterling Bank’s economist from 2007 to 2012. He has been making economic presentations on the nation and the region for more than 53 years and currently speaks to business groups around the nation.
John was a member of the Western Blue Chip Forecast Panel, the ABA’s Panel of Economists, a Trustee of the Aquila Tax Free Trust of Oregon, and a Board member of Oregon Mutual Insurance. He is a Board member of Northwest Bank. John served on the Oregon Council of Economic Advisers as well as the Idaho Council of Economic Advisers. He currently serves on the Association of Washington Business’s Council of Economic Advisers.
John and his wife, Carol live in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He enjoys biking, railroading, kayaking and his granddaughters.

Reservations are required to pay 1 night room, tax & surcharge at the time of booking. There is a 7 day prior to arrival cancellation period for all reservations to avoid forfeiture of the one-night deposit.

Cancellation Policy
Cancellations received on or before October 2, will receive their total fees minus a $75 Administrative fee. Cancellations received after October 2, will receive a 50% refund of their total fees. No shows or same-day cancellations will not be refunded any of the total fees. There is no reduction in fees for partial attendance
